TENURE TRACK FACULTY - ENGINEERING
TRUMAN COLLEGE 
 

Harry S Truman College seeks candidates for a Tenure-Track Full-Time Faculty member in the physical science department. Primary academic assignment responsibilities will commence in Fall 2025 and include teaching courses in Engineering and Drafting. If you have passion for teaching and learning and are committed to the mission of the community college, consider joining our team. The ideal candidate will have demonstrated success in the classroom by developing and using effective teaching strategies that meet students’ diverse needs and engage the student in critical thinking and problem-solving. 


PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Designs courses and prepares syllabi that have clearly articulated student learning objectives and learning outcomes that promote students’ active participation in their own learning.
  • Teaches on-campus and/or online classes in a manner consistent with the philosophy, policies, and guidelines of the college.
  • Creates an effective learning environment that fosters students’ intellectual curiosity and helps students to problem solve using discipline-specific thinking strategies. Demonstrates excellence in teaching and a commitment to integrating new technologies in the learning process.
  • Helps students reach their academic, personal, and career goals and fosters a safe environment that respects the diversity of individuals and ideas by modeling respect for all students and conveying confidence in every student’s ability to learn. Develops reciprocity and cooperation among students. Encourages active learning.
  • Employs a variety of teaching methods such as lectures, discussions, demonstrations, projects, and field trips in efforts to meet students’ varying learning needs, abilities, and interests and to optimize student outcomes.
  • Works individually with students who may need specific assistance in reaching their academic, personal, and career goals. Models respect for all students and conveys confidence in every student’s ability to learn.
  • Provides regular and useful feedback to students in an objective, consistent, and timely manner; evaluates and documents student performance using established methods and criteria and records course grades promptly.
  • Employs a variety of formative and summative assessments to ensure that classroom instruction leads to student learning and the attainment of student learning outcomes for the course. Develops and designs an assessment program that ensures students’ application and use of concepts, techniques, and innovations learned both in the classroom and through external course work.
  • Stays abreast of innovations and current trends in one’s specific academic discipline as they pertain to pedagogy and technology and continuously reflect on and refine their craft.
  • Participates in professional development activities aimed at enhancing the Talents of Teaching.
  • Attends regularly scheduled departmental meetings and contributes to campus and District committees.
  • Contributes to and provides leadership in academic and professional communities and promotes collaboration and teamwork among members of these communities.
  • Adheres to City Colleges of Chicago’s student-centered philosophy. Fosters student involvement and commitment. 


QUALIFICATIONS

  • Master’s Degree in Engineering, Physics, or Computer Science required;  Ph.D. Degree preferred.
  • Autodesk Certification in Computer Aided Design (CAD) Technology is highly desirable.
  • Two to three years of teaching experience, including lecture and lab, at the college level is highly preferred.
  • Demonstrated ability to work well within a departmental structure and with other faculty in the design and implementation of curriculum and assessment.
  • Demonstrated ability in using inquiry learning, cooperative learning, and other contemporary teaching techniques.
  • Demonstrated experience utilizing computer and multimedia technology in an instructional setting.
  • Demonstrated ability and interest in conducting community outreach projects.
  • Excellent verbal and written skills required with the ability to communicate persuasively with tact and diplomacy.
  • Ability to work in a culturally diverse work environment.
  • Experience with a diverse, multi-lingual student population desired, as is a commitment to the open access mission of the community college. 
  • Has a disposition towards developing the competencies outlined in the City Colleges Academic Excellence Pillars.
  • Knowledge of Brightspace or similar Learning Management System preferred. Prior experience with online teaching (via Zoom) and/or online teaching certification preferred.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications. 

Salary Range is $58,000.00 - $65,000.00

This position is represented by Local 1600 Union.

Chicago residency is required for all full-time employees within six (6) months of hire.
