City Colleges of Chicago (CCC), the largest community college system in Illinois, is made up of seven colleges and five satellite sites, providing more than 70,000 students each year access to a quality, affordable education.

The Federal Work-Study Program (FWS) is a federally funded financial aid program that provides subsidized part-time employment for eligible students to assist them with postsecondary financial needs. City Colleges of Chicago (CCC) complies with the Department of Education’s regulations regarding the FWS (Federal Work-Study) program and allows students to benefit from this opportunity.

PRIMARY OBJECTIVE:

The FWS program encourages students to gain experience in their prospective fields by placing them in areas and departments aligned with their area of study whenever possible. Students can use their wages towards educational and living expenses.

FWS jobs are available in areas such as academic departments, laboratories, libraries, administrative offices, student centers and several off-campus locations.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Eligibility Requirements:

  • Applicants must be 16 years or older, have work permit consent, and eligible to work in the United States.
  • Applicants must be actively attending one of the City Colleges of Chicago.
  • Applicants must be enrolled in a minimum of 6 credit semester hours.
  • Applicants must be pursuing an approved educational credential, degree, or certificate.
  • Applicants must have and maintain a minimum cumulative 2.0 GPA (waived for first semester new students).
  • Applicants must be in “good standing” – no City Colleges of Chicago academic restrictions.
  • Applicants must not be current Full or Part-time employees of the City Colleges of Chicago.
  • All positions are “employment at-will”.
  • To be considered for a Work-Study position, your Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) must be fully completed and processed.

 

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma is required, or actively pursuing a GED at the City Colleges of Chicago.
  • Knowledge of City Colleges of Chicago.
  • Excellent oral communication skills.
  • Excellent customer service skills.
  • Promotes a positive role model and favorable public image as City Colleges of Chicago representative.
  • Adheres to the City Colleges of Chicago Customer Services Excellence Standards.

 

Salary:

  • $17.00 or $19.00/hr.
  • Offered rate will be determined based on whether assigned location is on campus or off campus.

DEPARTMENT ASSISTANT

Essential Duties for all FWS Departmental Assistants:

  • Under the supervision of the designated staff member, the Federal Work-Study Departmental Assistant provides general support services to the assigned department.
  • Answers incoming phone calls, forwards calls to the appropriate personnel, and takes messages when individuals are unavailable.
  • Assists staff in the day-to-day functions of the assigned department.
  • Provides support on various projects and assignments as needed.
  • Manages calendars by scheduling appointments and updating with events.
  • Provides general office support, including but not limited to filing, faxing, photocopying, and word processing.
  • Possesses a high level of confidentiality.
  • Exudes a high level of professionalism.
  • Performs related duties as required.

 

LAB ASSISTANT

 

FWS roles are available in the following departments: 

  • Physical Science
  • Biology

 

Essential Duties for all FWS Lab Assistants:

  • Under the general direction of the assigned supervisor, the Student Lab Sciences Assistant performs laboratory duties in the assigned lab or department.
  • Monitors and assists students during laboratory use.
  • Assists lab instructor in lab supply maintenance.
  • Responsible for upkeep of laboratory equipment and cleanliness of lab.
  • Provides student access to equipment and lab tools
  • Provides general office support including but not limited to filing, faxing, photocopying, and word processing.
  • Performs related duties as required.

 

HEALTHY MARKET ASSISTANT

 

Essential Duties for all FWS Health Market Assistants:

 

Operations & Pantry Support

  • Assists Healthy Market Food Pantry staff in the day-to-day functions of the Food Pantry and other food support programs.
  • Assists in stocking and organizing pantry shelves, refrigerators, and freezers with packaged food, produce, and other items.
  • Helps unload and unpack food deliveries using carts or dollies.
  • Sorts and stores food items while checking expiration dates.
  • Helps prepare bags or boxes of food for distribution.
  • Assists with setting up and cleaning up for food distribution events.
  • Moves and organizes food and supplies before and after events.
  • Follows basic food safety and cleanliness guidelines.

 

Customer Service & Outreach

  • Greets pantry visitors and helps check them in for food distribution.
  • Answers basic questions in person or by phone about pantry services and events.
  • Helps share information about food pantry events by distributing flyers or posting materials.
  • Maintains a welcoming and respectful environment for all participants.

 

General Support

  • Participates in pantry/other food support program orientations or events as needed.
  • Works alongside other student workers and volunteers as part of a team.
  • Assists with simple record-keeping tasks such as sign-in sheets or tracking inventory.

 

Physical Requirements

  • Lifting, bending, carrying, unloading, and moving of food items.
  • Must be able to lift and carry up to 30 lbs. in the performance of duties.

 

STUDENT ACTIVITIES ASSISTANT

 

Essential Duties for all FWS Student Activities Assistants:

  • Plan and execute various types of cultural, social, and educational events/activities in a virtual capacity.
  • Assist with set-up, running and breakdown of events in a virtual capacity.
  • Collaborate with faculty, staff, and students on programming committees.
  • Office duties: Answering phones, assisting students/customers.

 

PEER TUTOR

 

Essential Duties for all FWS Peer Tutors:

  • Attends and successfully completes required tutor training meetings.
  • Listens and answers questions during tutoring sessions, helping students how to learn the material, develop and improve appropriate study skills and become independent learners.
  • Plans tutoring sessions using a collaborative learning approach to help students better understand the course content and concepts, problem solve, and improve study skills.
  • Engage tutees in active learning, and provides academic assistance and support to help students develop positive attitudes toward learning and studying.
  • Provides one-on-one support and encouragement to help student(s) develop increased sense of self confidence and become an independent learner.
  • Provides students with basic skills assistance in the academic area needed.
  • Provides clerical support and performs general office duties including data entry, scheduling appointments, answering phones, filing, faxing, and photocopying.

 

Additional Qualifications for all FWS Peer Tutors:

 

  • Must have a 3.0 overall GPA and a 4.0 GPA in a specific subject matter.
  • Strong background in math, science, literature, or other assigned subject area being tutored.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
  • Must be able to work flexible hours as needed.
  • Previous experience in tutoring and/or office work preferred, but not required.

 

THEATER – BOX OFFICE

 

Essential Duties for all FWS Theater Box Office:

  • The student will assist at the reception desk, greeting students, faculty, and staff entering the office.
  • Assists staff in the day-to-day functions of the Office.
  • Provides support on various projects and assignments as needed.
  • Provides general office support including but not limited to filing, faxing, photocopying, and data entry.

 

THEATER – CARPENTER SHOP

 

Essential Duties for all FWS Theater Carpenter Shop:

  • Students will assist at the reception desk, greeting students, faculty, and staff entering the office.
  • Assists staff in the day-to-day functions of the Office.
  • Provides support on various projects and assignments as needed.
  • Provides general office support including but not limited to filing, faxing, photocopying, and data entry.
  • Maintain and operate the equipment in Rooms A220 and A326.
  • Organize storeroom adjacent to A326.
  • Assemble premade frames and mount artwork.
  • Aid in mounting and arranging student work for displays and exhibitions.

 

FINANCIAL COACH

 

Essential Duties for all FWS Financial Coach:

  • Assist Student Financial Aid Advisor in performing outreach activities, such as Resource Fairs, financial literacy, Financial Aid events and or campus related events.
  • Assist students with project go related duties.
  • Assist in the completion of financial aid applications and public benefits processes.
  • Peer Financial Counselors are expected to become adept at learning and understanding financial aid programs and public benefit options, which may be available to meet a wide range of student needs.
  • Peer Financial Counselor will also serve any community members looking to get information on applying for financial aid or wrap around services
  • Some Services will include:
    • Students can talk with a Peer Financial Coach, have your financial needs evaluated and receive confidential advice in a comfortable environment.
    • Create a financial survival plan for college.
    • Learn how to identify and track expenses during and after college.
    • Access free tax preparation software.
    • Locate external financial education resources.
    • Apply for governmental wrap around services (i.e. Snap, Medicaid, Child Care Assistance)
    • Learn how to gain additional financial resources such as scholarships, financial aid, and part-time employment/work study or government assistance.
    • Create a personalized financial plan for your remaining time until graduation.
    • Learn how to obtain, interpret and understand your personal credit report / score.
    • Understand the impact of identity theft and learn how to avoid it.
  • Graduate with a plan for repaying your student loans and personal debt.
  • Discover other offices and agencies on campus or in the community that could aid you may need.
  • Learn about new business startup opportunities & legislature.

 

SAFETY AND SECURITY ASSISTANT

 

Essential Duties for all FWS Safety and Security Assistant:

  • Student will assist at reception desk, greeting students, faculty and staff entering office
  • Assists staff in the day-to-day functions of the Office.
  • Provides general office support including but not limited to filing, faxing, and photocopying.
  • Assists in surveillance and security policies/rules enforcement to safeguard college community
  • Watches for unusual or suspicious activities on college premises and identifies potential emergency conditions or unsafe situations to be reported to supervisor.
  • Follows up with Director of Security at the college.
