Malcolm X College is seeking a Speech Tutor – Part Time  for the Academic Support Department.

A Tutor provides students with tutoring and instructional support in an academic or occupational area of study to help improve their academic capabilities and progress academically, while promoting independent learning and self-reliance. Tutors assist tutees in developing and improving their competency in course work; and help students integrate and apply effective study skills, active reading and note-taking, test-taking strategies, and time management and organizational skills to their specific courses. Tutors work with students in various programs across the colleges, providing individual and small group tutoring in math, reading, writing, English, and other subject areas. Tutors also work inside the classroom as embedded tutors; tutor students in math and writing labs; and provide on-line tutoring services to students enrolled in distance learning courses. Performs related duties as required

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

· Provides academic assistance and tutoring to students on an individual or group basis on a wide range of subjects in an academic or occupational area.

· Tutors students to help them gain a deeper comprehension of course materials and a better understanding of work assignments to improve their academic success.

· Crafts effective tutoring plans to address tutee’s weaknesses and strengths; motivates students and provides them with confidence to feel successful.

· Provides students with learning strategies including ways to improve study skills and retention, how to organize work, effective use of time, and how to build better study habits.

· Schedules individual tutoring sessions at a college’s Tutoring/ Learning Resource/ Academic Support Center, based on students requests for tutoring in a specific subject area, course or discipline.

· Assists the tutee in problem solving and applying critical thinking techniques in the context of a specific discipline or subject area.

· Helps students develop positive attitudes and a high level of motivation towards learning and studying, build self-confidence and reduce anxiety or fear of failure in academic work.

· Tutors students and provide students with strategies to develop effective study habits and skills to improve academic capabilities.

· Prepares students for standardized testing and provides strategies to overcome test anxiety.

· Participates in tutor orientation and attends professional development and training sessions to increase competency in subject areas and improve tutoring skills.

· May conduct academic skill reviews and lead workshops on academic skills.

· Provide ongoing communication with students, Instructors and academic advisors regrading academic progress of individual students

· Maintains records on tutoring activities. Provides periodic student assessments and evaluations as required.

 

Embedded Tutor

· Supports the classroom Instructor as an embedded tutor, pro-actively engaging students in learning exercises, monitoring students’ level of comprehension, and assisting students in the classroom struggling with materials and course content.

· Meets with Instructor to discuss implementation and use of lesson plans, review feedback on learning activities, and to assess students’ progress and challenges in the classroom.

· Conducts in-class presentations on various strategies to improve academic capabilities including study and note taking skills, reading comprehension skills, and writing skills.

 

Reading and Writing Lab / Math Lab

· Coaches students through the writing process as it relates to various academic disciplines, helping students become better academic writers, develop critical thinking skills, and understand academic research and documentation of sources across the curriculum.

 

Tutor – Part Time

· Works with students to help them become adept with writing techniques used to plan, draft, revise, and edit written documents.

· Tutors students enrolled in an integrated reading/writing course at the developmental/ foundational level, to increase their academic proficiency to college level.

· Leads activities and works with students in developmental and ESL reading courses, such as practicing clear thoughts at the sentence and paragraph level, and longer-form writing.

· Assesses assigned student’s level of writing skills and attitude towards writing and sets goals for tutoring sessions at the writing center.

· Tutors students to improve their math competency and build confidence, applying learning strategies to work with students with different learning styles and abilities in math.

· Provides tutoring for various levels of math including developmental, transitional, high school mathematics (pre-algebra, geometry), college algebra and statistics.

QUALIFICATIONS: 

· Bachelor’s degree or higher from an accredited college or university in higher in a field of study and subject area related to the subject(s) being tutored, OR similar technical certifications and training. Specific additional requirements or certifications may be

required depending on the assignment area.

· Completion of tutoring certification preferred.

· Experience in teaching, tutoring, or delivering academic support to students at the postsecondary instructional level is strongly preferred.

· Experience working in a large, urban community college environment with a diverse cultural and ethnic student body is highly desirable.

· Knowledgeable of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)

· Proficiency in the subject area to be tutored.

· Knowledge of effective tutoring techniques and strategies in subject area(s)

· Knowledge of tutoring strategies used for improving students study skills.

· Excellent interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills

· Strong organizational and time management skills

· Strong problem solving skills

· Skill in tutoring students at the developmental or foundational level in reading, writing, or math

· Ability to work within a culturally diverse environment

· Ability to interact effectively with students and to motivate students to succeed

· Standard office equipment including computers and peripheral equipment

· Ability to operate computers and related equipment and software

· Initiative – Demonstrate willingness to take on responsibilities and job challenges

· Attention to Detail – Pay careful attention to detail and thoroughness in completing work tasks.

· Dependability – Demonstrate reliability, responsibility, and dependability and fulfill obligations.

· Technology Savvy – Capable user of technology who understands the role of technology in the institution and who will guide and support its efficient and effective use.
