Student Mentor – Wellness Center
Truman College
Harry S Truman College is seeking Student Mentors to support the Wellness Center. The Wellness Centers are located across the City Colleges of Chicago to provide students mental health services and referrals in the community college setting. The student mentor helps direct students to mental health and basic needs resources and acts as a liaison between wellness staff and students. Student Mentors will serve as student leaders who work to promote a cultural shift regarding mental health on their campus and throughout their community. Student Mentors will receive training, participate in designated events promoted by the Wellness Center and external community partners, support virtual and on-campus events and will have the opportunity to develop educational materials, present workshops to other students, and develop and publish social media content.
Duties and Responsibilities:
• Completes mandatory Student Mentor orientation on wellness topics, community resources, and mental health awareness.
• Engage with peers on campus to improve awareness of college resources and off-campus community resources.
• Completes administrative and support tasks to support the Wellness Center programming.
• Engages in ongoing training and professional development to improve understanding of mental health services and support and disparate impacts on marginalized populations.
• Supports outreach efforts by developing programming materials, disseminating flyers, creating social media posts, and helping to coordinate Wellness Center events.
• Attends monthly meetings with Wellness Center staff, and other offices and departments as needed
• Advocates for mental health on campus and works to reduce stigma related to mental health.
Eligibility Requirements:
• Applicants must be 18 years or older, have work permit consent, and eligible to work in the United States.
• Applicants must be actively attending one of the City Colleges of Chicago.
• Applicants must be enrolled in a minimum of 6 semester hours credit classes.
• Applicants must be pursuing an approved educational credential, degree, or certificate.
• Applicants must have and maintain a minimum cumulative 2.0 GPA (waived for first semester new students).
• Applicants must be in “good standing” – no City Colleges of Chicago academic restrictions.
• Applicants must not be current Full or Part-time employees of the City Colleges of Chicago.
• All positions are “employment at-will”.
Minimum Qualifications:
• High School Diploma required or actively pursuing a GED at the City Colleges of Chicago.
• Knowledge of City Colleges of Chicago, student activities, college resources and student services; knowledge of specific major or program.
• Good interpersonal skills with a positive attitude and ease in relating to people from a variety of educational, cultural and social backgrounds.
• Demonstrated good study techniques and skills.
• Good oral communication skills.
• Knowledge of computer software programs.
The hourly rate for this position is $17.05/hr. The rate paid is in accordance with City Colleges approved salary scale.
