STEAMbassadors – Part-Time

City Colleges of Chicago (CCC), the largest community college system in Illinois, is made up of seven colleges and five satellite sites, providing more than 70,000 students each year access to a quality, affordable education.

STEAMbassador Program, is a mentorship workforce initiative designed to engage college student in discovering, strengthening, and sharing their STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts, and math) interests and passions with youth, with the goal of integrating STEAM into the everyday lives of and building learning pathways for youth.  STEAMbassador utilizes a “from community, for community” model to address inequities and lack of educator representation from and programming in underserved, underrepresented communities, particularly in STEAM.

PRIMARY OBJECTIVE

Reporting to the Dean of Education and Teacher Programs, STEAMbassadors are college students from partnering two- and four-year institutions functioning as specially trained mentors to elementary and middle-school aged Chicago youth interested in learning opportunities in science, technology, engineering, arts, and math (STEAM).

STEAMbassadors work with youth to foster and cultivate their interest in STEAM related fields and areas of learning, providing them with a robust set of experiences on a variety of science, technology, engineering, arts, and math (STEAM) activities in both informal learning spaces (i.e. parks and libraries) and on-line programs.   

The STEAMbassador program offers year-round part-time employment with a maximum of up to 20 hours a week.  Hired candidates will receive training in STEAM content and knowledge-based activities, as well as leadership and mentoring skills, in preparation for serving as STEAMbassadors.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES

• Completes necessary STEAM training provided by Truman College and/or its partner in preparation for working with elementary and middle school students within spaces and in communities throughout Chicago. 
• Leads and works with youths on various types of sessions, activities, and projects that enforces knowledge and skills in science, technology, engineering, arts, and math (STEAM) content areas.
• Facilitates virtual or in-person camps as needed for designated sites, working with youth on STEAM activities such as coding music, flying drones, building machines, and writing stories.
• Provides support on various STEAMbassador or Innovation One projects and assignments as needed.
• Receives on-going professional development as needed or provided by Truman or and/or its partner organizations.

QUALIFICATIONS:

• Must be enrolled as a City Colleges of Chicago student or a college student in a partnering college or university.

• Must complete a background check and drug test (CCC does not test for marijuana)
• Must be able to promote a positive role model and favorable image in representing City Colleges of Chicago
• Demonstrated interest in a STEAM related field
• Able and willing to work with elementary and middle school children
• Good interpersonal skill with a positive attitude
• Ability to work with people from a variety of educational, cultural, and social backgrounds
