PEER TUTOR PART TIME - ADULT EDUCATION DEPARTMENT
OLIVE-HARVEY COLLEGE
Olive-Harvey College is currently seeking a part-time Peer Tutor for the Adult Education Department. A Peer Tutor provides academic assistance and support to other students, providing individual and/or group tutoring to assist students in developing competency in course work, improve study skills and become independent learners.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES
- Provides students with basic skills assistance in the academic area needed.
- Provides one-on-one support and encouragement to help student(s) develop increased sense of self-confidence and become an independent learner.
- Engages tutees in active learning and provides academic assistance and support to help students develop positive attitudes toward learning and studying.
- Listens and answers questions during tutoring sessions, helping students how to learn the material, develop and improve appropriate study skills and become independent learners.
- Attends and successfully completes required tutor training meetings.
- Plans tutoring sessions using a collaborative learning approach to help students better understand the course content and concepts, problem solve, and improve study skills to prepare for academic success.
- Provides clerical support and performs general office duties including data entry, scheduling appointments, answering phones, filing, and photocopying.
ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS
- Applicants must be 16 years or older, have work permit consent, and be eligible to work in the United States
- Applicants must be actively attending one of the City Colleges of Chicago
- Applicants must be enrolled in an ESL Transition level course
,or working towards a high school diploma with a minimum of NRS Level 4 High Intermediate - Applicants should maintain a pattern of good class attendance
- Applicants must provide a recommendation from an instructor or administration
- Applicants should have demonstrated academic progress by making a level gain
- Applicants must be in good standing and have no City Colleges of Chicago academic restrictions
- Applicants must not be current Full or Part-time employees of the City Colleges of Chicago
- All positions are employment at-will
QUALIFICATIONS
- Strong background in math, science, social studies, language arts, ESL, or other assigned subject area being tutored.
- Must be able to work flexible hours as needed
- Previous experience in tutoring and/or office work preferred, but not required
- Working knowledge of subject area or course content to be tutored.
- Some knowledge of tutoring strategies used to assist tutees in learning how to think and problem solve in the context of a specific discipline/ subject area
- Good interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills
- Organizational and time management skills
- Reasoning and problem-solving skills
- Skill in tutoring students and explaining content in more than one way
- Ability to work within a culturally diverse environment
- Ability to manage tasks, manage time and maintain schedules
- Ability to guide tutoring sessions
- Working knowledge of Microsoft Office 365 (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook)
