MUNTU AFRICAN DANCE & DRUM INSTRUCTOR – PART-TIME

Kennedy-King College is seeking a Part-Time Muntu African Dance & Drum Instructor that directly supports student success by creating a dynamic and engaging learning environment where students can explore dance as a form of physical activity, cultural expression, and social connection. This role allows the ideal candidate to share the rich cultural tradition of Muntu African Dance with a diverse group of students, helping to preserve and pass on this unique dance form while making a positive impact on the community.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: 

  • A typical day for the Muntu African Dance & Drum Instructor involves greeting and teaching students dance, drumming, and traditional West African curriculum with in dept information about the ethnicity, purpose, and history.  The instructor will arrive early to prepare the space, ensuring that all materials and music are set up for the session.
  • The instructor will have the opportunity to work with various departments and students, design engaging lessons, creating fun and interactive routines that cater to beginners and advanced dancers alike.
  • The instructor will have the rewarding task of watching students grow and gain confidence in their knowledge about African dance and culture. They’ll be working with a passionate group of students eager to learn and develop their skills in a supportive and fun environment.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent required.
  • Classroom Management and Engagement: From day one, the instructor will need to confidently manage and engage students, fostering an inclusive, fun, and energetic learning environment. They’ll need to establish rapport quickly, ensuring students of all skill levels feel comfortable and motivated to participate.
  • Mastery of African Dance & Drum Techniques: The instructor must be well-versed in African Dance & Drumming and prepared to demonstrate and teach key techniques immediately. This includes breaking down moves for beginners and adjusting the pace to accommodate different learning speeds.
  • Lesson Planning and Adaptability: The instructor will need to quickly develop lesson plans that are both structured and flexible, adapting to the needs of the class. They should be able to adjust the curriculum on the fly based on student progress, ensuring everyone can keep up and have a positive experience.
