Malcolm X College is seeking a Healthy Market Food Pantry Worker - Part Time for the Wellness Center. PRIMARY OBJECTIVE
Reporting to the Clinical Director , the Healthy Market Food Pantry Worker(PT) performs operational and manual tasks related to receiving, shelving, and organizing packaged and refrigerated food products as well as fresh produce for distribution to students, CCC personnel, and the surrounding community.
The Healthy Market Food Pantry Worker (PT) assists the supervisor in maintaining food inventory records; prepares food orders for submission to the Greater Chicago Food Depository (GCFD) to re-stock pantry; and maintains records on the number of individuals participating in the Healthy Market Food Pantry. Performs related duties as required.
NOTE: Position is expected to occasionally work outside of normally scheduled hours to accommodate GCFD food deliveries.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES
Manual/Operations Tasks
- Works as part of a team to stock and organize food pantry with packaged and refrigerated food and fresh produce to help alleviate the food insecurity challenges of students.
- Receives food deliveries from GCFD, loading boxes from pallets onto a dolly(s), moving/pushing loaded dolly(s) to pantry site, and unloading and unpacking food items for shelving and storage.
- Organizes and stores received goods on shelves, refrigerator, or freezer in compliance with Greater Chicago Food Depository (GCFD) food safety standards and checks expiration dates.
- As needed, re-packs bulk food and produce and may organize assorted food items into individual/family packages, boxes, or tote bags for distribution and pick-up.
- Organizes and prepares for food distribution events, informing janitors on where to set up tables and move heavy/large items and storage containers to designated event space and area.
- Works with student workers and volunteers to organize, move, and carry lightweight food items to tables to provide access to students and guests.
- Participates in returning leftover food products to storage following event, moving items into storage bins, boxes, and refrigerated appliances.
- Checks and verifies participants complete the one-time Client Enrollment at The Greater Chicago Food Depository form.
Customer Service/ Clerical
- Registers and checks-in Healthy Market participants; ensures guidelines for number of visits per month are followed; maintains confidentiality of personal information shared by students.
- Greets guests and distributes food to those eligible within the community at large and to those in need of emergency food assistance.
- Responds to information requests regarding the Healthy Market Pantry received in person, via phone, and email.
- Distributes flyers and helps publicize food distribution events to encourage student participation in the Healthy Food Market.
- Adheres to cleaning, storage, and food safety protocols for pantry operations.
- Assists in maintaining food inventory records and placing food orders with the Greater Chicago Food Depository.
- Provides orientation and guidance to student workers and volunteers as required.
- Participates in on-site enrollment events each semester for GCDF services.
- Obtains and maintains a Food Handler Certificate
- Must be able to handle physical aspects of the job such as lifting, carrying, and moving of lightweight items.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
The physical demands are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of the job. The job requires lifting, bending, carrying, unloading, and moving of food items. Must be able to lift and carry up to 30 lbs.in the performance of duties
QUALIFICATIONS
- High School diploma or equivalent (such as HiSET or GED)
- Some food panty or clerical work experience desirable
- Must obtain a Food Services Sanitation Manager Certificate from an approved training program within 60 days of hire
- Must be courteous with good customer service skills
- Good verbal and written communication skills
- Ability to stock and distribute food items in an efficient and timely manner
- Ability to maintain records and perform data entry
- Ability to work in a culturally diverse environment
- Basic computer skills and familiarity in using Microsoft Office
Salary: $17 per hour
Offered salary will be determined by the respective collective bargaining agreement and applicant's education, experience, knowledge, skills and abilities.
