Speech and Theater (English, Speech, Theater and Journalism)

Harold Washington College, one of the City Colleges of Chicago, is seeking a candidate for a full-time, tenure-track faculty position teaching speech and theater within the English, Speech, Theater, and Journalism department. As an open-access institution, Harold Washington College is a dynamic, vertical campus located in the city’s theatre district (the Loop) with students attending from all over Chicago and the world.

Therefore, the ideal candidate for this position should have demonstrated success and/or expertise in the following areas:

      working in an urban environment with diverse learners;

      applying inclusive active learning teaching strategies within the classroom;

      teaching speech and possibly theatre courses.

 Primary Responsibilities:

      Teach both speech and possibly theatre courses each semester, primarily face-to-face, and with an emphasis on the general education public speaking course;

      Support departmental activities including but not limited to assessment and improving curriculum;

      Promote an effective learning environment that fosters students’ intellectual curiosity and helps students to solve problems using discipline-specific thinking strategies;

      Employ a variety of formative and summative assessments to ensure that classroom instruction leads to student learning and the attainment of the student learning outcomes for the course; and

      Help students reach their academic, personal, and career goals; and foster a safe environment that respects the diversity of people and ideas by modeling respect for all students and conveying confidence in every student’s ability to learn.

 Additional Opportunities:

·       Revive Oratorical Festival competition for students.

      Contribute to the college’s theater program.

 Qualifications

Master’s degree or PhD in Communication Studies,

Master’s degree or PhD in Performance Studies,

Master’s or MFA in Theater Arts

Knowledge of Brightspace, preferred

Excellent oral and written communication skills, and ability to communicate with diverse group of staff and students required

Experience with a diverse, multilingual student population is desired, as is a commitment to the open access mission of the college
